📘 Basic Rules of Pickleball

Before jumping straight in it is always helpful to know the basic rules of pickleball:

• Scoring: Points are only scored by the serving team. Games are typically played to 11 points, and you must win by 2. In doubles, both players on a team get a chance to serve before the serve passes to the opposition (except at the very start of the game, where only one player serves). The score is always called as three numbers in doubles: serving team score – receiving team score – server number (e.g. 5–3–2).
• Serving: Serves must be made underarm, with contact below the waist, and the paddle moving in an upward motion. The serve is hit diagonally across the court and must land in the opponent’s service box. Only one serve attempt is allowed (no second serve). The serve must clear the “kitchen” (non-volley zone), including the line. At the start of each rally, both the serve and the return must bounce once before players can hit volleys (this is known as the “double bounce rule”).
• Faults: A fault occurs if a serve lands outside the correct service box or in the kitchen, if a player hits the ball out of bounds, into the net, or allows it to bounce twice. Players cannot volley (hit the ball in the air) while standing in the kitchen or touching its line. A fault results in loss of serve or a point for the serving team.
